Batch chromatography separations, including HPLC suffer from scalability due to back pressure and are constrained when large volume processing is required. In order to overcome this limitation, parallelization by employing multiple chromatography skids is considered, however resulting in large CAPEX and OPEX. In the recent years, the upstream productivity has been increased quite dramatically with the generation of high producer cell lines, allowing a 10-100 fold increase in raw product. In contrast, the downstream processing capabilities have not improved at the same pace, generating a processing bottleneck. The ContiChrom technology based on the MCSGP principle is a continuous chromatography process solution that can match any upstream output and is particularly suitable where high resolution separations have to be combined with high process throughput and large process feed volumes. Besides Affinity chromatography, being rather expensive and selective only to individually selected species where suitable matrices have been generated, ContiChrom is the only high resolution high throughput technology that can address large volume production constraints.
